1.0 STREETSCAPE DESIGN Guidelines
1.4.7 Lighting
Lighting is a functional and aesthetic part of the streetscape. The overhead lighting provides for traffic safety along the street. Pedestrian lighting provides a significant change of scale for the pedestrian use of the street.
Guidelines:
1. Overhead street lighting must be located at specified intervals along each side of the street.
2. Pedestrian lighting can play a major role in the design of the commercial streetscape. It provides visual continuity along the linear street and can be a series of focal points within pedestrian oriented plazas and rest areas.
3. Light fixtures should relate to the specific design character of a particular neighborhood or section of the City. Pedestrian lighting provides a significant level of security and can encourage more use of the street at night.
4. Special effects lighting could include the additionof electrical outlets in the vicinity of trees for the installation of string lights in the tree branches. Up lighting can be provided in landscape areas or at the base of trees for special visual effects.
